I just graduated from the University of Burning Man! This was my 4th year attending and working at this magical event in the desert in the middle of nowhere. This year I took on two roles: Manager for the official Burning Man Documentation Team and Project Manager for Josh Yeo's Time Travelers Elevator. The Time Travelers Elevator won a Burning Man honorarium and I help raised the money to complete it.
I loved working with new photographers and old friends on the Documentation Team. I stayed at Camp Journeylism with my playa family. It filled me with joy!
Unfortunately, a participant ran into the Burning Man fire Saturday night. One of our camp mates worked as a 'Sandman' for the Black Rock Rangers. (Sandmen tackle people running toward fires.) Visibly shaken, she told us two guys tried to run into the fire, but her team stopped them. A third guy ran through the perimeter and into the fire. He was pulled out and transferred to a California hospital. To prevent another tragedy, 620 people volunteered to secure the Temple Burn perimeter, the next night.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family and with everyone that was affected.
